Transition lenses: Everything you need to know

Tired of switching between glasses? 2 pairs too many?

If yes, transition lenses might be for you.

Transition lenses (or photochromic lenses) darken when exposed to sunlight and lighten when in softer artificial light. They’ve been around for over a decade and offer the convenience of having both sunglasses and prescription glasses in one pair!

No more awkwardly wedging your sunglasses over your regular eyewear or constantly switching between the two.

What are the pros?

  • Convenience- seems like the most obvious pro here: No need to worry about leaving your sunglasses/regular eyewear in the car or fumbling around the house because ‘you swear you saw them on the kitchen side last night!’
  • Cost effective – since transition lenses effectively mean you’ll have a pair of sunglasses and prescription specs combined, there’s no need to invest in two pairs.
  • UV protection-  Just make sure you always look for a CE, UV 400 or British Standard Mark. This ensures your sunglasses provide adequate UV protection.
  • Different styles – Transitional lenses come in a wide variety of styles, shades and tints. No limits on personal style here!

What about cons?

  • They darken and lighten to varying degrees depending on the brand.
  • Some also take longer to transition than others- again depending on brand.
  • Affected by cold weather – Transitional lenses are also affected by colder weather, meaning they take a bit longer to react to UV rays in winter.
  • They don’t darken as well inside cars. Auto glass has some UV protection, which can prevent photochromic lenses from darkening. Some lenses are designed to help solve this problem.
